Our name
What is "Bethel"
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn't even aware of it!" But he was also afraid and said, "What an awesome place this is! It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven!"...He named that place Bethel (which means "house of God") - Genesis 28:16-17,19a
Just like Jacob did, we dedicate our facility to God. It is his domain and surely he is in it. When we enter the church, we remember that, in all things, this is God's house.
What is "Christian Reformed"
"Christian Reformed", or more specifically the "Christian Reformed Church in North America" is the denomination our church has been founded from and in turn supports. It is a small part of a larger body of Christians around the world. This is not to imply that this denomination is superior to others in any way, but rather we treat it as one specific accent in the single language of Christian faith. Our denomination has provided an excellent summary of what "Christian Reformed" really means.
What is the "Church"
The "church" in our name (of course) refers to the physical facility that sits as 716 Classic Dr. London, Ontario. However, a church is not just a building. It also refers to all the activities (tangible and intangible) we do together for each other and the neighbourhood community. Finally, the name affirms our membership in the Church (with a capital C). This refers to the body of Christians around the world. A group of believers who affirm that:
- The world is separated from God because of the sinful behaviours and thoughts now present within it
- God provides the link once again through a saviour who has taken the penalty for all our sins (that is Jesus Christ)
- Because we are reconciled to God, we have been given the Holy Spirit which continues to guide us against the sinful forces here on earth until it is destroyed and our relationship with God can begin anew
What to expect on Sunday
Services begin at 10:00 every Sunday morning. We begin with words and music to worship God. Because we are all sinners, we follow with words and music to confess our sins and thank him for forgiveness. We follow this with a children's story and a sermon so that we may be enlightened to a greater understanding of God and his word. We close out the service around 11:30 with more worship. After the service, feel free to join us for coffee and other refreshments, or check out our welcome centre for more information on the church right in the main foyer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What about young children?
We provide a nursery for all children from infants up to ~3 years old. All adults babysitting your children have had a police background check in accordance with our Safe Church Team policies. The nursery can be found near the South entrance.
And older?
During the service (prior to the Sermon), children aged 3 up to about grade 5 will be invited to come to the front to hear a version of the sermon specifically targeted for their age group. After the children's story, they are invited to go to Sunday School for singing, lessons, and crafts while the rest of us stay for the sermon.
And older?
Pre-teens and teenagers are of course encouraged to stay for the sermon (rest assured they will find the sermons enlightening and relevant too). We also offer many exciting programs throughout the week including Cadets (boys club), GEMS (girls club), and Crossfire Youth Group (everybody Grade 7-12). These programs provide an excellent opportunity to connect with their peers, continue to learn Christianity from an age appropriate level, and live out their faith in their everyday lives.
What should I wear?
Dress casually and comfortably.
So, does the Church do anything else throughout the week?
Be sure to see our Activities page for more information on all our programs, including small-group activities ranging from informal sports programs like Baseball and Golf, to in-depth book discussions.
Are you wheelchair accessible? Other handicaps?
Our facilities should be accessible by everybody. Wheelchair entrances are on the West side. We provide services for the hearing and visually impaired as well. If you require assistance in any respect, do not hesitate to ask your greeter.
I still have a question about...
If you have questions that remain unanswered, be sure to send an e-mail to the church through the "Contact us" page. Also feel free to ask our members and volunteers for more information. If we do not have the answer, we should be able to find someone who does.
