“Resurrection and Life” - April 15, 2021

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die...” John 11:25 (NIV)

In our Sunday messages for this season of Easter 2021, we are taking a look at other resurrection-like stories that one can find in the Bible.  Many involve Jesus raising someone from the dead.  One of the longest and most loved of those stories is the story of Lazarus.

Jesus visits two sisters Mary and Martha and raises their brother Lazarus from the dead.  It goes without saying that it is hard to imagine the reality and the joy.  I believe this story is so well-loved not only for its central miracle but because of its down-to-earth human elements.  Mary and Martha’s grief and confusion over Lazarus’ death.  Mary’s frustration with Jesus’ delay in arriving.  The initial weeping of Jesus himself over the news of Lazarus’ passing.

A very real and down-to-earth acknowledgement of the pain and grief experienced in this world can fill the simple act of looking up to Jesus (our Resurrection and Life) with even more meaning and power.

When it seems like you have lost everything

Take a look up, take a look up, brother

When it seems like you have lost everything

Take a look up, take a look up, sister

When every single breath you take is full of pain

When all hope seems to be out of sight

Lift up your eyes to the One that death couldn’t hold

He will raise you up, he will raise you up

He’s reaching out for you, the Resurrection and the Life
