“Renew” - February 24, 2021
“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (NLT)
I mentioned last week in our church bulletin’s ENDNOTES that Psalm 51 has always been the church’s “go-to psalm” during the season of Lent. Central to the practices associated with Lent are repentance and confession, a turning back to God and an admitting that we need God to rescue and cleanse us. Both are unmistakably on display in Psalm 51. But repentance and confession aren’t wildly popular postures, even for followers of Jesus who are more familiar with them.
However, the season of Lent does give opportunity to consider some of the rich outcomes possible through these postures. Repentance and confession are not simply ends in themselves but may lead to a deeper, truer and more authentic experience of God. Finding strength and shelter with God, being set free from self-obsession in order to practice generous selflessness, experiencing righteousness and purity of heart, and discovering the joy of rebirth and love through Christ’s death and resurrection are among their rich outcomes.
Although the 2021 journey through season of Lent will be more solitary than past seasons, we may still look to the positive outcomes of its postures and mindset.
Offer the following prayer as you listen to the song “Create in Me” posted by “The Acappella Company.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noUeQQ64Q1I
"Create in me a clean heart oh God
Let me be like you in all my ways
Give me your strength, teach me your song
Shelter me in the shadow of your wings
For we are your righteousness
If we die to ourselves and live through your deathThen we shall be born again to be blessed in your love!"
