“Look” - May 5, 2020

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry …. Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”  Matthew 6:25-26

Several weeks ago, someone used a clenched fist as an illustration of our relationship to worry.  You may actually try to demonstrate this yourself by making a fist and clenching it tightly.  In your hands you are holding many worries; fears regarding your health, your future, your children’s future, your finances and the overall well-being of your family and loved ones.  The clenching of the fist may represent our fearful instinct to grasp for control and even manipulation.

But Jesus wants us to let fear and worry go.  He wants us to unclench and relax our fists, releasing our worry and fear.  Jesus wants us to hold life more loosely and surrender our living to the loving care of our heavenly Father.

The strategy for unclenching and surrendering to God’s care is simple, just look.  Look to the care God provides for all of his creation.

Early Sunday morning, I sat outside for a few minutes, enjoying the warmth and sunshine on my face, some early spring growth in the garden – and the birds, numerous and playfully noisy!  It was a good moment to release my fears and recall again the words of Jesus,

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

PRAYER ENCOURAGEMENT:  Lord, help us to release, surrender and unclench any worry and fear.  Help us to look.  Help us to see your care of creation as a sign of your even greater care of us in Jesus Christ .  In His name, Amen.
