“Keep” - May 20, 2020
“You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book.”
Psalm 56:8 (NLT)
Yesterday, under the current Covid-19 restrictions, we held a service of interment for one of our church’s long-time members at Forest Lawn Cemetery. During the service, we spent a little extra time listening to some scripture that was special to Jane.
One of the passages read was the verse quoted above from Psalm 56. On occasion Jane and I would talk about those images and the comfort they provide, especially in the context of difficult losses. To think that God himself cares enough to track each of our sorrows! To imagine God’s empathy extending to every detail of our hurt and pain, so much so that he collects every tear in a bottle and records each heartache in a book! Certainly, such a person is a God whom we can trust and draw strength from, no matter the weight of what we may need to carry.
Psalm 56 ends with this sentence: “So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.” Trusting God in all the challenges of a lifetime involves envisioning God in all his mercy and compassion, knowing that He journeys with us, knowing his life-giving light, especially as it comes to us through Jesus Christ.
PRAYER ENCOURAGEMENT: Lord, thank you that you listen to us so intently. Give us the freedom to lay our deepest sorrows before you without hesitation or fear. Help us to trust your deep mercy and compassion. Thank you that your presence and your Son are a life-giving light in our lives. In Jesus name, Amen.
