“Healer” - December 16, 2020

’But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,' declares the LORD.

                                                                            Jeremiah 30:17

We’ve all been craving the fulfillment of a vision of healing and restoration during this pandemic.  Recently, we’ve seen the success of the vaccine trials and the beginning of the vaccine’s world-wide distribution.  Despite the care and vigilance still needed over several months to come, we have some hope for moving beyond our pandemic limitations and struggles.

The people in exile needed restoration and healing of another kind.  They yearned for release from their oppressors and a return to life in freedom as God’s redeemed people.  During advent we look to the coming of the Messiah to bring us healing and restoration on every level, for our world, for our neighbours, for ourselves.  When Jesus, the God-with-us arrives, the world experiences something of what the prophet spoke in Isaiah 58:8 “Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear…”

“Healer of our every ill, light of each tomorrow, give us peace beyond our fear and hope beyond our sorrow. You who know our fears and sadness, grace us with your peace and gladness. Spirit of all comfort, fill our hearts.” (Marty Haugen, song text to ‘Healer of our Every Ill’)

Today’s song Healer of our Every Ill  is offered by choirs participating in an online worship service.  You may listen to the whole service or you may move immediately to about the 2-minute mark (2:20) to listen to this song only.  This song can also be found in the Faith Alive Christian Resources hymnal LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS # 303.
