The new year has started and it doesn’t seem to take long before seeing things dated with “2020” becomes routine. The speedy passage of time in yet another year, here we go again!
Last week during the children’s blessing I briefly mentioned that 2020 has an extra day. It is a leap year with February 29 as our ‘extra’ day. For the children, I repeated the question that I heard someone on the radio pose: “What are you going to do with your extra day?” I’m sure that if a number of us brainstormed together we could make quite the list of things to do or accomplish (or maybe NOT do) with our extra time in 2020. Ideally posing that question makes us ask ourselves not only what we’re doing with our extra time in 2020 but also our time right now and every day moving forward.
This week one of the elders began our prayer meeting with a reading of Psalm 90, emphasizing the prayer of verse 12. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Truly, there is wisdom in recognizing our limits as human beings and noting how quickly time passes. Taking stock, numbering our days sounds like a worthy exercise for our extra day in 2020 but more likely a worthy one for every day of this new year. -EGN
