Today’s date on the calendar always has had my attention throughout my life; it’s my father’s birthdate. As a child a person pays attention to those birthdates as they come and go for your loved ones. When it’s one of your parents, you might playfully tease them a little for how high the number is becoming. But of course, we all reach a point in which there are no more years to count because we have passed on to be fully in the presence of the Lord. This year it is eight years since my Dad passed; had he lived he would have been 95 years old in 2021. Psalm 90 gives us many lessons about the quick passing of time. Verse 12 contains a prayer by which the poet asks to be taught to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. The New Living Translation puts it this way: “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” As we begin a new year and mark the birthdates that appear in them, let’s be mindful of the need to grow in wisdom in the Lord, looking to the love of Jesus to lead us. I know my Dad did.
