The most fundamental word of instruction we receive from Jesus is this: “Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than
these.” As we think about not only the close connection between loving God and loving
neighbour, we also in our globally-connected world know that our neighbour love must extend to
our “global neighbours.” Through media we are made aware daily of needs from around the
world and are called on to pray for ‘our neighbours.’ Lately, we have been reminded of the
desperate need to pray for peace to settle in on the Tigray region of Ethiopia and its victims of
violence, including those fleeing the region to Sudan. Other than a general knowledge that
Ethiopia is on the continent of Africa, it may be difficult to have a clear sense of where in the
world this region is located. Here’s a simple suggestion. Many of us are able to access online
news reports, including maps. Next time, you are called upon to pray for needs in a region with
which you are unfamiliar, first take a moment to look it up, consider the area and its
surroundings - and then, with the location in your mind’s eye, pray!
