    Lenten season

    February 28, 2020

Today is the first Sunday in the season of Lent. Lent is a unique time in the church calendar, one that leads us forward to Easter Sunday through a focus on Jesus’ journey to the cross. In the history of the church, Lent has been viewed as an opportunity to take additional and intentional time for confession, reflection and spiritually enhancing practices or habits. For each week during Lent 2020, I’ll be suggesting a Lenten practice to add to our weeks as we journey through this season. The main source for these suggestions is “Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices That Transform Us” by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun. The practice suggested for this first week is called “UNPLUGGING” and is part of thetheme of OPENING OURSELVES TO GOD. ‘Unplugging’ probably doesn’t require a great deal of explanation. It is simply a commitment to eliminate or significantly reduce our use of technology, especially our connection to the screens of televisions, tablets or phones. The desire of the practice of unplugging is to experience being more fully present and uninterrupted in our interactions with God and each other. Technology can have a compulsive and demanding nature. Even if we are only marginally able to reduce our screen time this week, let’s make the attempt. Discuss this question with a friend: How has technology affected your relationship with God? With others?      -EGN
