    Holy week

    March 26, 2021

Starting today we begin what the church throughout history has referred to as “Holy Week” which leads up to Easter Sunday. Although we want to continue to give priority to our 40 Days of Discernment readings, we may want to add to our daily routine the following Holy Week readings that attempt to recreate that last week of Jesus’ life prior to Easter Sunday. Although not all scholars agree precisely on coordinating the events and the days of the week, we may consider the following:

Sunday: Palm Sunday – Jesus enters Jerusalem, the triumphal entry - Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19.

Monday: Jesus cleanses the temple – Matthew 21:12-13, Mark 11:15-18

Tuesday: Jesus teaches in the temple - Matthew 21:28-23:39; Mark 12:1-44

Wednesday: The plot against Jesus unfolds – Matthew 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11; Luke 22:3-6

Thursday: The Last Supper – Matthew 26:17-29; John 13:1-38

Thursday night and Friday: Jesus’ arrest and trial – Matthew 26:47-27:26; Luke 22:47-23:25

Friday: Jesus crucifixion and death – Matthew 27:27-56; Luke 23:26-49; John 19:17-30

Saturday: the tomb of Jesus is guarded by Roman soldiers - Matthew 27:62-65

May our preparations for Good Friday and Easter Sunday be led by the Holy Spirit.—EGN
