    Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations

Extravagant Generosity February 9, 2018 Pastor Eric Groot-Nibbelink

Fruitful living is joy-filled, abundant living in Christ.  When we are overtaken by the generosity of Jesus, our expressions of generosity towards others overflow beyond measure; then “the floodgates of heaven” are thrown open and so much blessing is poured out “there will not be room enough to store it.” (Malachi 3)

The early church in Macedonia provided a wonderful example for Paul to point to as a means of encouraging other Christians to give with extravagant generosity.  They were not materially well to do themselves; however, they gave a generous gift for the Jerusalem Christians who were in dire need.  The Macedonians were an inspiring illustration of the grace of giving and a powerful reflection of our Lord Jesus who “though he was rich, yet for your sakes became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9)

We can also be encouraged that all of our fruitful living and particularly our practice of extravagant generosity may act as a messenger of the gospel.  Paul tells Christians that because of generosity in our giving, “people will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 9:13)   -EGN
