Five Habits of Highly Missional People

Summertime Review July 24, 2018 Pastor Eric Groot-Nibbelink
If you are looking for a summer challenge, take time to review the book that we all received last summer.  Below is a summary that may help you get you started. -EGN

    SURPRISE THE WORLD!
The Five Habits of Highly Missional People
    Michael Frost (NAV Press, 2016)
In this short book the author Michael Frost, well known for his writing and speaking about the church’s need to be mission-minded lays out five habits that would be helpful for church leaders and members alike to practice.  In his introductory reflections, he speaks well of the one-time events that churches might hold to connect in mission with their communities and those around them but suggests we can do more -and do it more regularly, more habitually, in fact weekly.  These suggested weekly habits are meant to help us internalize that mission or outreaching mindset that imitates God’s working throughout history and in the world.

    THE FIVE HABITS -  B.  E.  L.  L.  S.

    BLESS:
      THE FIRST HABIT
I will bless three people this week -at least one of whom is not a member of our church.
As God has blessed us, am I offering blessing in words of affirmation, acts of kindness and  gifts?

    EAT:
    THE SECOND HABIT
I will eat with three people this week -at least one of whom is not a member of our church.
Am I living the biblical command to “practice hospitality” (Rom.12:13)  as Jesus Himself did?

    LISTEN:
    THE THIRD HABIT
I will spend at least one period of the week listening for the Spirit’s voice.
Have I taken time to be quiet in order to let distractions fall away and allow the Spirit to speak?

    LEARN
    : THE FOURTH HABIT
I will spend at least one period of the week learning Christ.
How have I spent time with Christ devotionally in order to become like Christ?

    SENT:
    THE FIFTH HABIT
I will journal throughout the week all the ways I alerted others to the universal reign of God through Christ.
How am I being a preview (or trailer) of the kingdom? (with a special emphasis on reconciliation, justice, beauty, wholeness)
