At Bethel Church we have entered into a 40 Day period of discernment.  To help us do so we have been supplied with a set of devotionals by the Center For Church Renewal (with excerpts from The Blue Book: A Devotional Guide for Every Season of Your Life by Jim Branch).  You may be wondering what exactly discernment or ‘spiritual discernment’ is or looks like.  A. Alhberg Calhoun -who has written a highly recommended book on spiritual disciplines, says that our desire in discernment is “to delight in and recognize the voice and will of God.”  What discernment is meant to do is “open us up to listen to and recognize the voice and patterns of God’s direction in our lives.”  According to Calhoun this practice includes such things as: ‘taking time to listen to God; not hurrying to make a decision’, ‘seeking to bring both head and heart in line with God’s will’, incorporating the wise ‘counsel of others’ and ‘listening in prayer for the nudging of the Spirit.’  May God’s Spirit lead and direct us together as practice discernment.  “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault…” (James 1:5) - EGN
