    Demonstrating the mind of Christ

    October 23, 2020

I’m quite certain that anywhere in the world, where there is an international news service, there are multiple reports and updates on the upcoming American presidential election. Being one of the United States’ closest neighbours and being so connected geographically, economically and often personally via family and friendships, we Canadians have been paying particularly close attention to what is happening politically to the south of us. Some days the level and intensity of division that is vocalized and enacted among citizens of the same nation is disturbing. That division has spilled over into US churches and among US Christians. You can imagine that I especially sympathize not only with church members but also with pastors in US Christian Reformed churches who must stand and minister in the midst of these divisions. There may be no quick solutions and easy answers for resolving these differences but certainly the Bible gives us several fundamental postures and principles for speaking together thoughtfully and existing together lovingly as followers of Jesus. We continue to pray for fellow Christians in the US and ourselves as we all strive for demonstrating ‘the mind of Christ.’ Here is just one of many fundamental postures the Bible suggests:

"Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus..” (Philippians 2:1-5)
